This is a basic foundation course only. All professionals are expected to regularly update their skills and knowledge with Continuing Professional Development courses. For Physiotherapists this is currently one Acupuncture CPD day every 2 years to allow continued practise of the skill.
Following this course you will be able to:
- Clarify current guidelines for treating patients with medical acupuncture and dry needling
- Understand protocols for treating different conditions and client groups
- Apply point prescriptions to patients with back, neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and foot pain and associated areas of likely dysfunction
- Understand the ‘red flags’ and contraindications to needling to treat clients safely
- Discuss the considerations for screening clients who are not suitable for needling, dealing with abreactions and needle shock, needling sensitive and higher risk areas
- Increase your awareness of current research issues and justify your treatments using the available evidence base
- Justify your treatment approaches for this patient group utilising current research
- Locate and needle the relevant acupoint prescriptions confidently
- Utilise acupressure massage points in treatments and teach patients for self care at home
- Use of acupressure magnets for self care between treatments
This course is suitable for Physiotherapists, Osteopaths, Remedial and Manual therapists
This is a 3 day intensive CPD course. Each day consists of theory blended with ample time for demonstrations and practice. There are self study questions and a safety questionnaire to be completed alongside regular assessment throughout the course testing your grasp of point location, and needling technique in practical sessions. Satisfactory completion of your skills log by needling to required standards is necessary for certificate issue at the end of the course. There will be consolidation sessions before the end of the three days to ensure everyone has chance to reach a satisfactory level of skill and confidence. The course predominantly covers the Western Medical application of needling relevant acupuncture and Trigger points for each condition or area of the body covered, although there may be some basic Chinese Medicine concepts explained where relevant. It is aimed at those trained in physical therapies such as Physiotherapy, Osteopathy Chiropractic and Sports therapy. It is a pre-requirement of the course to have a foundation training in one of these disciplines in order to have the minimal standard of knowledge of anatomy and physiology alongside an understanding of the standards required of your profession. General practitioners, Doctors and nurses are also welcome.
Guidelines for treating musculo skeletal conditions
We will clarify how to integrate the techniques into your treatment protocols and examine the requirements of this modality of treatment in terms of health and safety, comfort and scope of professional practise.
Protocols and Techniques
Ample time for demonstrating and practising the relevant acupuncture points in pairs or small groups will be allocated.
Specific acupuncture point prescriptions for various musculoskeletal conditions and discomforts will be covered for the following areas:
Day 1 Back : Lumbar and Thoracic
Day 2 Neck, Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist
Day 3 Hip, Knee, Foot and ankle
Red Flags and contraindications
Review of what is considered normal and abnormal for common musculoskeletal complaints and gain awareness of which points are contraindicated for certain clients or conditions presenting in clinic.
Evidence and Science We will identify the research underpinning how acupuncture works and justification for it’s use in treatments. A discussion of the current debates and dilemmas within the acupuncture research arena and the controversial contested NICE guidelines and the recent support statement in 2017 from the American medical professional regulatory body recommending acupuncture for back pain and other MSK conditions after reviewing the most recent research.
Acupressure massage techniques
We will learn various methods of applying Acupressure to both trigger and acupoints to teach patients as self care will be covered. The scientific mechanism of action will be explained so you can simplify and relay this to your patients in terms they can understand.
Course is Delivered by Fully Qualified Acupunturist, Sports Massage Therapist and Midwife. The tutor deliveres the course for physiotherapists, chiropractitioners and osteopaths in universities across UK.

Insurance and Advertising Requirements
You need to obtain insurance as a student for needling and then you can register the certificate with your relevant professional body to have this added to your professional insurance cover.
This is not a Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture training which takes 3 years or more and it is important to not advertise or promote yourself as an acupuncturist. Your additional training is for dry needling and medical acupuncture, using some Trigger points and Traditional points for musculoskeletal therapeutic purposes only.
Trigger Point Therapy
A fantastic two day course covering trigger point therapy. The course covers myofascial trigger points (tiny contraction knots that may develop in a muscle when it is injured or overworked).
The trigger point therapy is used extensively by massage therapists, sports massage therapists, physiotherapy, chiropractors, osteopaths and medical doctors. The course covers assessing and treating trigger points for all major muscles to help clients with pain relief.

As this is a continuous professional course, there are no formal exams at the end of the course. There is a short assignment to recap understand on day two of the course.
Level 4 Sports Massage Course ITEC
This is a regulated qualifications, developed with public health experts, build upon Government’s public health guidelines. It offers bespoke content specific to treatments within each sector. This qualification will ensure learners are equipped with the most current and essential knowledge required to safely and effectively perform treatments and services within their industry.
The aim of this unit is to develop the learner’s knowledge and understanding of how to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and how to work safely.
Learners will develop knowledge on the importance of social responsibility, the causes, transmission and effects of COVID-19, and the methods used to control transmission, such as correct hand hygiene and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). They will also gain an understanding of the safe working practices required to protect themselves and their clients.
On completion of this unit, learners will:
- LO1 Understand the causes, transmission and effects of COVID-19
- LO2 Understand social responsibility for the complementary therapy and sports massage sectors in relation to COVID-19
- LO3 Understand the controls necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19
- LO4 Understand the importance of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Hand Hygiene and Personal Hygiene in the prevention of COVID-19
- LO5 Understand potential hazards and risks and the workplace procedures necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the complementary therapy/sports massage environment
- LO6 Understand decontamination and waste management processes relevant to complementary therapies and sports massage

They will also gain an understanding of the safe working practices required in the treatment environment in order to protect themselves and their clients.
The VTCT (ITEC) Level 2 Award in Infection Prevention (COVID-19) for Complementary Therapies and Sports Massage is a knowledge-based qualification aimed at beauty therapists, who need to understand the COVID-19 infection prevention methods required in the working environment in order to maintain high levels of health and safety in the provision of their services to clients.
